  • Premier League teams will start wearing sponsors on sleeves from next season
  • Eight teams have negotiated an aggregated deal to don the same sponsor
  • Sleeve sponsors are reckoned to be worth around 20 per cent of shirt deals

  • Premier League clubs could be set to earn up to £10million more from sponsorship after talks to add a sponsor to the sleeves of shirts opened ahead of next season.
Sporting Group International have brokered a deal with eight top-flight teams to sell the rights for their kit's sleeve to the same sponsor.
The space is valued at around a fifth of that of a main kit sponsor, and so clubs such as Manchester United, who receive £47million-a-year from Chevrolet to be on their shirts, could see a further £10m invested in the club.

Premier League clubs will don sponsors on their sleeves from the beginning of next season

Shirt sponsorship deals in the Premier League hit £226.5million ahead of the 2016-17 season, and that number would see each club in the top-flight earn on average an extra £2.3m for the branding on their arm.
'It's the first time in EPL history the sleeve can be sold and, hopefully, it will be the first time that one brand has been seen on multiple shirts from potentially eight to 10 clubs,' SGI CEO Adrian Wright told the the Mirror
There are at least two top-flight clubs who will not be able to participate in the deal for next season, due to current deals with main sponsors banning the appearance of a secondary brand on the kit.
Each club will still have the Premier League logo on their left-hand sleeve, however advertising will take up the entire right.

  • Liverpool and Manchester City were reportedly interested in the Saints star
  • Chairman Ralph Krueger has vowed to change their future transfer tactics
  • Van Dijk's centre back partner Jose Fonte left for West Ham in January

  • Southampton captain Virgil van Dijk will not be moving clubs this summer, insists chairman Ralph Krueger.
The defender was in demand in January with a host of top Premier League clubs reportedly interested in the Dutchman.
Tall, strong, athletic and a threat at both ends - the 25-year-old has been a stand-out performer for Claude Puel's side and has proven himself to be more than adept since his move from Celtic in 2015.

But Krueger is adamant Saints will fight off any advances for their star performer and assured fans he will stay at St Mary's - after his defensive partner Jose Fonte made the switch to West Ham last month.
'We are just out of the January transfer window and are striving to keep this group together and to build on it,' Krueger told talkSPORT.

    RECENT OUTGOINGS AT ST MARY'S

Some big names have been sold on by the Saints since 2014/15...
    Jose Fonte - West Ham
    Sadio Mane - Liverpool
    Graziano Pelle - Shandong Luneng
    Victor Wanyama - Tottenham
    Morgan Schneiderlin - Man United
    Nathaniel Clyne - Liverpool

    Luke Shaw - Man United

The Saints' revered production line and shrewd transfer dealings have yielded top talents which now grace other top clubs in England.
Southampton have fallen foul to the label of a 'selling club' in recent years, with their assets being prised away by Premier League heavyweights, leaving the club in a constant rebuilding state.
Now the chairman has said the club will change their approach to future transfer windows in order to stabilise and build upon the foundations established by their recruitment policy and stellar academy set-up.
'We don't want to do what we did in the last three summers every year,' Krueger added.
'We would like to move away from that and we feel confident this summer will be a lot quieter in Southampton and we can keep the core of this team moving forward for a few years.
'That is going to be important when you see how excellent the group is right now and how exciting the football is.
'The game we are playing is a pleasure to watch and a pleasure to be part of.'

'Wayne Rooney can make us stronger': Everton manager Ronald Koeman opens door for Manchester United striker's Goodison Park return

Everton manager Ronald Koeman has opened the door for Wayne Rooney to return to Goodison Park.
Manchester United's record goalscorer has been linked with a move back to his boyhood club, having struggled to hold down a regular place under Jose Mourinho.
Rooney's agent was in China this month, seemingly to sound out interest in his client, but the 31-year-old player last week issued a statement insisting he was staying at Old Trafford.

Wayne Rooney was an unused substitute as Manchester United beat Southampton 3-2

However, his long-term future remains in doubt, and Koeman is ready to make a move in the summer to bring Rooney back to where it all began.
'I believe that Wayne Rooney is still playing at a high level,' the Dutchman told Sky Sports.
'I think he made a good choice to stay at Manchester United and in the Premier League because he has still two or three years in front of him to play on a high level.
'What will happen at the end of the season? I don't know but in my opinion he is one of the players who can make Everton more stronger.

'It's all about what the player likes, what Manchester United needs to do, and we are not involved in that project.
'But every player that we at Everton think can make the team stronger is welcome to Everton.'
Rooney progressed through the ranks in the Toffees' academy, having joined at the age of nine, and his rise accelerated in his mid-teens as he moved from the youth side to become a first-team regular.
He made his debut aged 16 on the opening day of the 2002/03 campaign against Tottenham and six weeks later became Everton's youngest scorer with two goals against Wrexham in the League Cup. He scored his first Premier League goal a fortnight later - a last-minute winner against Arsenal five days before his 17th birthday.
Everton were unable to hang on to Rooney when United came calling in the summer of 2004 but there is now a realistic prospect of him making the move back to Merseyside.
Koeman's comments were backed up by director of football Steve Walsh, who said it would be remiss of the club not to be interested if Rooney was available.

Ronald Koeman believes a Goodison Park return for Rooney would improve his Everton side

'Wayne Rooney is one of the greatest players that has ever played the game in England and for us not to be interested would be wrong,' he said.
'He started his career here and if the opportunity arose that he could come back and it sat well with everyone it is something we would consider.
'He is a class apart, he sees things, and all the things that have been said about Wayne are true. He comes into that category of being one of England's greatest ever players, so why wouldn't we be interested?
'I think the whole thing would be euphoric. I think we could sell a lot of shirts, that's for sure.
'But let's not get ahead of ourselves. Wayne is contracted to Manchester United and made a decision to continue to play for them.
'Let's wait and see what happens in the future.'

Craig Shakespeare: Leicester caretaker boss in frame to get job on permanent basis

Craig Shakespeare: Leicester caretaker boss in frame to get job on permanent basis.

Shakespeare stepped up from Leicester assistant to caretaker manager after Ranieri's sacking

Caretaker boss Craig Shakespeare is firmly in contention for the Leicester manager's job on a longer-term basis following Claudio Ranieri's sacking.
Shakespeare was Ranieri's assistant and is popular with the club's players.
The 3-1 win over Liverpool on Monday boosted his chances of being given the job until at least the end of the term.
After the win he said: "Could I do the job? I think I can. Does it faze me? No. We have to make sure the owners do what's right for the football club."
No timescale has yet been set for the appointment, but if Shakespeare remains in charge for Saturday's home match against Hull City in the Premier League - a vital game for both clubs - a return of at least four points out of six and improved performances would count in his favour.
"My remit was get them ready for Liverpool and I have done that," Shakespeare said.
"Let's see what happens. I think it might be too early to make an appointment but the club will come to me if there are any changes."
Shakespeare represents continuity, having been at the side of previous managers Nigel Pearson and Ranieri.
And, with just 12 games left this season, other candidates with higher profiles may not feel they have enough time left to arrest the slide.
Shakespeare gets on well with the players and is a highly regarded coach.
Former England coach Sam Allardyce thought enough of him to bring him into his coaching set-up with the national team, despite never having worked with him.
The Leicester hierarchy felt Shakespeare handled himself well in a difficult situation when he met the media after Ranieri's departure, showing just the right amount of steely ambition when asked if he would like the job full-time while dealing diplomatically with some tough questions.
He was also smart enough to avoid publicly shaming the players - knowing he has to work with them for at least a few more days.

Carlo Ancelotti celebrated his 1,000th game in management on Saturday... we look back at 10 of his finest moments with Milan, Chelsea, PSG, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich

Carlo Ancelotti celebrated his 1,000th match as a manager in style on Saturday as his Bayern Munich side battered Hamburg 8-0 to maintain a five-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga.
The Italian was presented with a big bouquet of flowers before the match at the Allianz Arena to mark the milestone and then enjoyed his team's free-flowing and free-scoring performance.
Ancelotti enjoyed considerable success as a player, helping Milan to back-to-back European Cups in the late Eighties, as well as three Scudettos with them and Roma, plus a host of other honours.

And he took this magic touch into management, winning major trophies with Milan, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid. Further success with Bayern Munich appears inevitable for the genial boss.
To mark Ancelotti's 1,000th game, we take a look back at 10 of his finest moments in management.

2003: Milan conquer Europe after Old Trafford chess match
After cutting his managerial teeth at Reggiana, Parma and Juventus following the end of his playing days in 1992, Ancelotti really started to achieve success after coming to Milan in 2001.
Having suffered initial criticism for his defensive approach, Ancelotti managed to forge a Champions League-winning team that included the likes of Paolo Maldini, Andrea Pirlo, Clarence Seedorf, Andriy Shevchenko and Filippo Inzaghi.
They met Juventus at Old Trafford in an all-Italian final that matched up to the stereotype of the nation's football - tense, tight and tactical.

Angel Di Maria rages at 'disrespectful' attempt of PSG to sell him to China during the January transfer window

French giants PSG were so unimpressed with the early season form of Argentinian winger Angel Di Maria that they attempted to offload the former Real Madrid man to China, it has emerged.
The 29-year-old started the current campaign in underwhelming fashion for the Ligue 1 side, with the club then opting to seek out the opportunity to send the player to the Chinese Super League for a lucrative big money deal.
PSG's sports management team, including former Barcelona icon Patrick Kluivert, had sounded out a move for the player following the club's humiliating 3-0 setback at Montpellier in December, report L'Equipe.

Manager Unai Emery is reported to have then given his blessing to a move, with the club seeking representatives in Argentina to facilitate in harboring interest from the big names of Chinese football.
PSG are also believed to have called upon the services of super agent Jorge Mendes to assist with the matter.

Di Maria was said to be initially unaware of any potential move, and was later believed to be angry with the club for their conduct.
'Angel really did not like it,' one of the player's relatives told L'Equipe.
'He found it disrespectful,' the source added.

With hindsight PSG may now be extremely grateful any move did not materialise, after Di Maria flourished in the club's recent historic Champions League victory over Barcelona.
The Paris-based side pulled off an unexpected masterclass over the Catalan giants, subjecting Lionel Messi and co. to a 4-0 demolition at the Parc Des Princes.
Di Maria scored a brace on the night - which also happened to be his birthday - and was a commanding presence throughout.
The two clubs will meet again for the second leg at the Nou Camp on Wednesday, March 8, with Barca requiring four goals without reply just to take the tie into extra time.

Atletico Madrid 1-2 Barcelona: Lionel Messi nets late winner after Diego Godin had levelled for the hosts .

As is so often the case, Lionel Messi has different ideas from everyone else.
Barcelona looked committed to running their title race aground against Atletico Madrid and with five minutes to go, they seemed set to throw away two more points.
With four to go, they were top by two points — and in between, Messi had his say. They were, however, only top of La Liga for a matter of hours before Real Madrid returned to the summit with a victory over Villarreal.

Messi stabbed home his 20th goal of the season to hand Barcelona a victory they can consider themselves very fortunate indeed to walk away with.
Atletico were in charge for large periods, although it was the visitors who opened the scoring.
Barcelona used to be known for their tiki-taka but when Rafinha broke the deadlock in the 64th minute it was more like pinball, the ball bouncing around wildly inside the box before the Brazilian stabbed home from close range.
The lead didn't last long, though, with Diego Godin heading home Koke's free-kick just six minutes later to restore parity.
It was Godin who denied Barcelona the title on the last day of the 2013-14 season and before Messi's late intervention it seemed he would do them severe damage once again.
Luis Enrique had again refused to pick the midfield that led Barcelona to a treble then a double, with Rafinha starting ahead of Ivan Rakitic, who has lost his indispensable status this season.
He also opted for Jeremy Mathieu over Jordi Alba at left-back, adding both height and strength but losing pace and a valuable attacking outlet down that flank.

PSV concede incredible own goal to end title hopes as keeper Jeroen Zoet scoops ball up over his line to gift Feyenoord victory.

PSV's fading Eredivise title hopes were dealt a crushing blow as goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet picked the ball up over his own line to gift Feyenoord victory.
The stopper fielded a header from Jan-Arie van der Heijden eight minutes from time only to fumble the ball then regather control, before pulling the ball to his chest with his body still behind the line.
The referee was alerted by his watch that the ball had crossed the line and Feyenoord were given the goal to seal their 2-1 win.
